sims 3 and pixel shader 2.0 help!

i just installed my sims 3 and attempted to play it and got a message saying "your video carddoes not appear to support at least Shader model 2. please upgrade your card"
my comp currently has directx 9.0c on it and is on windows xp.
do i have to buy a new video card?or can i upgrade my current one? if i do have to buy a new card whats the cheapest ones i can get?
please help

You need to buy a new card as you can't upgade a graphics card.
I take it you have a desktop and not a laptop as you can't change the card in the latter.
Depending on whether you have an AGP or PCie slot either of these will do for the Sims 3.
Just don't expect to play many other types of modern games with them.
