installing fonts

I am running windows XP and have downloaded a new font that I wanted and the folder is now on my desktop but when I open fonts and click on install new font it cant find it so how do I get it into fonts, no rocket science please I'm a beginner, step by step info would be great, thanks

Did your font come as a zip file? Unzip it first if so.
When the dialog box comes up asking what fonts to install, are you pointing it to the desktop?
