I have been having problems with this virus? malware? for some time the problem started when I first opened my user area an error messages says this is not a valid windows image file I have found the file in System32 and taken advice from the Internet to alter the file name to SOCKSPY.dl this seems to have cured the problem but I can't help wondering that there is an application somewhere that is instigating this problem

I assume that you're using BitDefender as your security software, because Sockspy.dll is part of it.

If Bitdefender functions normally after you've renamed the file I can see no reason to be concerned. Renaming the file appears (from Ccooper1971's post here) to be exactly what Bitdefender's software team recommend:
