Film format conversion from m4v to AVI etc.

Is there any freeware or free software to convert m4v (iTunes films) to AVI or similar format, to enable freedom to view films away from having to use iTunes to play them?
Any help appreciated!!

hi garfield,
thanks for the help, the films I downloaded were from iTunes store, and are protected by DRM, i just thought there might be freeware to convert from m4v to avi-looks I'll have purchase
a converter, but thanks again for your help.
