Windows Aero Not Capable

Your current graphics adapter won't support the Windows Aero user interface.

What do I need to do, as I have not a clue what it means.

you need to give more info for a start ...

machine/processor/memory/graphics card/disc size/ram - the usual stuff that decides if your machine is up to the job

have you downloaded new dirvers for your kit written specifically for 7

I'm curious why you are using 7 at this stage - it's still in pre-release ...and to be honest - you don't seem to be a techie.

Because Windows 7 is on sale now pre release in the autumn at a good discount rate.

No I have not downloaded drivers for Windows 7 as the update adviser says that I need a graphics adapter for this product, hence this question.

so you're using pre release beta software because it's to be released 22 octobe (3 months yet)!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sorry mist - you don't seem able to answer (or even understand the significance of) the questions.

... or follow the pointers ... you're either going to have to live with it - and any loss of data - or go back to whatever o/s you came from ... and wait untill the finished product comes out - and then we start again -

because you're still going to need drivers because the correct drivers could just allow 7 to id your hardware and let it determine what's needed.

I am not using the beta version, it is not installed on my computer.

You don't seem to understand, Microsoft update tool is telling me that my system is fine for Windows 7 except for the graphics adapter.

What advantages do you expect to get from installing Windows 7?

Unless you are already running Vista, there is no point whatsoever in upgrading.

The microsoft site has checked my system everything else is ok except the graphics adapter.

Misto, Microsoft are in the business of selling software. The advisor may tell you that your system is capable of running Windows 7. What it's not going to say is "although your system can run Windows 7, it's going to be a real stretch and we really wouldn't recommend it".

If you post details of your system, you will get unbiased advice from experienced users who can tell you if it's actually a good idea to consider installing Windows 7.

Ok so, you're using the Windows 7 upgrade advisor.

The Aero user interface (read: fancy transparent window effects) require that your hardware meet certain minimum specifications. Microsoft state these requirements as:

A DirectX 9 Compatible graphics adapter with support for Pixel Shader 2.0 and a minimum of 128MB of Video RAM.

So basically, your graphics card or your onboard graphics chip does not meet this specification. Likely, it either does not have Pixel Shader 2.0 or it has less than the aforementioned amount of dedicated video memory. The upgrade advisor, in this case, is therefore telling you that you can run Windows 7, but not with the fancy glass looking window effect.

Solution? If you have a desktop PC, buy a new graphics card. If you have a laptop, dream on...
