Problem installing new hardware

I tried to install my phone on my computer to download the photos on it. Separately i also tried to install a digital photoframe (to put the photos off my phone on) and I also tried to install a new flash drive. On all attempts I got the same error message from the installation wizard. " An errorror occurred during installation of the device" "the data is invalid". I have tried using different USB's on both the front and back of my tower, and rebooted the computer to no avail. the USB's work ok on an already installed flash drive. Any idea what's wrong?
