Ripping soundtrack from recorded video

I have a Samsung hard drive recorder and would like to transfer the sound track of a recorded programme to MP3 (so I can listen to them in the car). I assume that I would have to save the programme to DVD first but I'm not sure what to do after that. Does anyone have any ideas?
