Problems setting up a new PC

I'm just setting up my new Dell Inspiron desktop PC ( Vista Home premium) and find that the windows desktop falls off the left of the screen unless I set the screen res to 800x600. Any ideas how I can get a sensible screen res? The monitor is Viewsonic VA712b. Install cd is XP only.
Thanks in advance...Geoff
Also, when I plugged my Laserjet 1010 into my laptop (also Vista) it was automatically installed and worked a treat. This doesn't happen on the new desktop and since I have long ago lost the CD that came with the printer I'm a bit stuck.

The first part of your question is ambiguous. The native resolution of your monitor is 1280x1024. Are you saying that at this resolution, it's too big to fit the screen? That doesn't sound very likely!

You can get the drivers for your laserjet from here:

Sorry to be ambiguous Rojash, but what I meant was that the first column of desktop icons plus Start button are off the left of the screen at anything other than 800x600. I've found its due to being stuck at 60Hz refresh rate which I could not change until I unticked the box that says "hide modes that the monitor cannot display" and now I can set 85Hz refresh rate and 1280x1024 without losing the first 1/2 inch of the screen.
I've also sorted the printer by pretending it was on dot4 rather than usb and I managed to install it there, though I still don't understand why my laptop with the same OS simply installed the laserjet automatically when I plugged the usb lead in.

Thank, Geoff
