No standby option on laptop

I recently changed my acer laptop to run on xp as vista was a problem. However, overheating then became the next problem untill, I installed a chipset driver from acers website. Following the instalation I find I cant put the lappy into standby, and it only gives me the shut down option! Anyone?? Cheers.
