Purchasing a Windows upgrade

If I purchased the new Windows 7 upgrade if in future I needed to do a recovery would I have to load the previous Windows and updates each time beforehand? Also do you always need the previous version or could you go back more than 1 version?

Yes thanks for that info. Also like you say it pays to back up your old system on a separate hard drive. In fact I did use Macrium reflect to do this some time ago but I have never restored from this and I assume one day it will be necessary.
