Outlook express doesn't have a spell checker in it as default, it will use the Microsoft office one if you have that installed, or there are several third party spellcheckers available for it, before even beginning to answer the question we need to know what is providing the spell check function for your outlook express?

Do you have office installed?

I have micorsoft office outlook. the spell checker is on the new msg page.

that should have spelt microsoft
I also use Outlook Express. Try this - in Outlook Express go to Tool > Options > Spelling. Mine then shows an option of languages with a drop down box which for me shows English (UK). Hope this might be the answer for you, but not sure! Good luck.
Do you use Word 2007 by any chance? For some reason the spell checker in this doesn't work in English. You have 2 choices.

1. Install a 3rd party spell checker for Outlook express
2. If you have an older copy of Word / Office then install just the 'proofing tools' from that by doing a custom install.

There's loads of info on this if you google "outlook express spellcheck french"
