A job as a phone in host on the radio

For several years now i have always enjoyed listening to certain radio stations that have phone in's.Most recently i have been listening to the phone in programme that features in Talk Sport between 10am-1pm.Can anyone tell me how i could get started in the Radio?.I would love to be the host of one of these phone in programmes that feature on the radio.

Like most media jobs, there are no hard and fast rules as to how you can break in to those careers. Many radio presenters often start out by gaining experience working (voluntarily) for their local hospital radio. A school friend of mine who is now with Radio 1 started out this way, working evenings and weekends, and said he would never has got his foot in the door of a local radio station without this experience.

I would guess that you need some experience in the 'topic' of the phone in.  Mostly people who are experts in their field get jobs like this.  What would be your topic?

A friend of mine has got into radio by doing work experience first, and then reading the travel! She now has her own programme. Like most jobs, there is a ladder to climb, and you need to prove yourself on the way up. You could also volunteer to do some hospital radio- even the "graveyard" spot, in order to get some experience. Or you could enrol at your local college and do a qualification in Media studies where they will teach you how to use the equipment and help you with your CV if you need it.
