Windows XP pro desktop

My brother, (who knows very little about PC's the same as me), has somehow managed to remove all of the desktop shortcuts from my Dad's PC. I've tried going into display & desktop via control panel and can't find anyway of getting them back. I know he can access most things via the start menu but it just doesn't look right without these shortcuts, (If that's what they're called). Does anyone have any ideas?? As you may have gathered I don't know a lot about computers so please bear this in mind if you have an answer.
