I spent a considerable amount of time updating the MP3 library putting in correct names, artist, composer and checking the album online.
I then find that after reloading the songs are once again completely wrong.
Is this a known fault ?

You should really try Winamp Pro ...
Works a lot better than WMP for this sort of job.

If the files are being replaced in Alphabetical order, try putting a number in front of the name, i.e. 001, 002, etc.

I swear by K-lite codec pack.
Very stripped down and basic and easy to use once installed, totally virus/malware/spyware free, plays every format (if the "lots of stuff" option ticked).

...and if you choose "windows media player classic" you don't have to put up with all that stupid fiddly 'console' rubbish wrapped around it when you watch videos.
