Sudden slow down

I've been running this lap top with free AVG since I've had it . I've recently had problems with my modem but it now seems to be ok again, My download speed has dropped enormously. 29hrs to download a one hour prog on i player, Tiscali say everythings ok their end, and the laptop says it has no problem is it that I do need a new modem? Are there any simple checks I can run? I'm not very computer literate. Many thanks

Switch off System Restore, do a full scan to make sure there is no trojan downloading porn files or otherwise hogging bandwidth for you.
Check your speed, preferably with a proper tester.

It seems to have rectified itself now (I'm convinced it was tiscali) but thanks for that and I'll use those tools. Thanks again.
