No sound

I rarely turn my computer speakers on,but when I did the other day there is no sound coming from them.I have not selected anything to turn them off,deleted any progs that may need sound.I know the first thing to do would be to substitute for another pair to check if the speakers are at fault but I cant see the pair I have failing.Any ideas welcome.TIA

Are they still plugged in at the back of the computer?

Has the jack been pushed into the wrong hole?

Do they have a separate lead to provide power, and is this plugged in?
Are you on Windows XP ?
Go to Control Panel, Go to Sounds and Audio Devices
Go to Audio
Check the Default Playback Device
Tick the box "only use default devices"

sarah_L Followed your advise but am unable to follow instuctions as all windows sound/audio wont allow me to click box if you know what I mean
