Windows XP 'blue screen of death' and 'freezing' problems

I am experiencing a very frustrating problem with my new computer which runs on Windows XP. It either 'freezes' in the middle of an application (for no apparent reason) and will not even restart with Ctrl+Alt+Del, or it shuts down (again fot no apparent reason) and displays the infamous 'blue screen of death', in which case it needs to be shut down. I though Windows Xp were disigned in order to avoid such problems (amongst other things). I am worried because it is an entirely new computer (2 months old). Is there something I can do before contacting the manufacturer?
