maxtor/seagate external hard drive

Hi - a friend of mine has a maxtor 500gb hard drive which he accidentally dropped only about 12 inces onto carpetted floor. It now doesnt work, making only a repetitive buzzing noise.

Can anyone suggest what he might do - all his music was on there and he's gitted!

Buy a new drive, and restore the music from his backup copies?

Take to pc shop (not pc world!). They might be able to retrieve the data.

I expect a wiper arm has jammed or something like that.
Home recovery is almost impossible .. unless you want to bite the bullet and have a very steady hand and plastic tweezers/screwdriver.

has he got a back up of his music?

a computer company would have to repair it to get the music off it to copy onto a new drive, it wont be cheap thats for sure

This is why I backup my data to TWO external hard drives (and a spare computer in my house). I also backup up a lot of it to CDs and DVDs.

It is very easy to drop a laptop or external hard drive.

I am afraid you can never have too many backups.

If it has, it can't be economically repaired - it'll be cheaper to re-purchase the music.
