My Windows Media Player has suddenly decided it doesn't want to play dvd's. Nothing happens at all when I put a dvd in to my laptop. The only thing I have done recently is remove Quicktime Player as I assumed I only needed this for itunes which I removed ages ago as I didn't use it. Could I have somehow changed my default dvd player (I don't remember doing it) and, if so, how can I change it back again or check it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Quicktime Player plavs MOV (movie) files, and other movir formats.
Why not just reinstall ti and see if that fixes the problem.
Also, removing software based on "assumptions" that you dont need them is not always a good idea. Many pieces of software are installed on your computer that do all sorts of things, but you may not be aware what they do.
Thanks VHG. Have tried re-installing it but still no joy. I am getting a message that says cannot play dvd and error COOD116C. Have tried googling this but no joy and can't find on Windows site. Can anyone help please?
It's possible that you haven't got the proper codecs installed in WMP for your DVDs.
If you are using Windows XP google for " XP-Codec-Pack_2.5.1.exe" and install it.
Thank you Wak. Been waiting for a reply. Can you tell me why though this could happen when I could play the same dvd before? I will try your suggestion though.
WMP...bleaaauch !
I ditched it ages ago in favour of K-Lite codec pack, which has all the codecs for playing anything audio/video wise, and it comes with a good old fashioned 'no-frills' Windows classic style player.
Hi AP. It's not a downloaded dvd I'm trying to play, it's a bought one and I have played it before so I don't understand why it won't work. Is the K-Lite pack free?
Thanks bez. I'd appreciate it. Like to watch a film in the wee small hours when I can't sleep and if I watch on the laptop with headphones means I don't have to worry about the tv waking Gary up.
First thing to check is Autoplay. This may have been cocked up when you removed Quicktime. (Quicktime and Real Player FULL installations are very invasive to Windows. If you really don't need them, you can still play their content by just installing Quicktime Alternative and Real Alternative, along with Classic Media Player (all free and non-invasive to your system) Then you can play their content with WMP or CMP
Open My Computer
R Click on the drive you play DVD's from
Select Properties .. and Autoplay
In dropdown select DVD Movie ...
Select Play with Windows Media Player then "Apply"
Try that. Sometimes Autoplay can get corrupted in Registry. There is a free tool to test/repair it.
Come back here if no good after above.
