Whose prerogative?
I am under the impression that in many households the use of a computer is the prerogative of the male and women tend to shy away and let them get on with it. Why is this and shouldn't women be encouraged to use computers? Is it purely a matter of technology and not wanting to be bothered or is there some other reason?

But where do you get this impression?
I would estimate that the breakdown in household that I know the breakdown is nearer to:
35% Male is prime user
35% Female is prime user
30% They have at least one computer each.

Sorry coldicote, your perception is a load of rubbish. We have a computer which we share equally, we both use them at work, we both have laptops as well as the shared PC. Your premise might have been true years back, when only men were techies, but it's far from true these days. Who does the on-line shopping and the eBaying and the spreadsheets for the household budget and keeps in touch with folk by email... the female of the species, defo. OH uses it for work.
