I have an external HDD with my PC with my Music/Photos etc backed up. Can I connect the HDD to my MAcBook and copy the files over?

right click on the drive in my computer on the PC and select properties, if it shows the file system as FAT32 then it will work on a MAC or a PC. If it says it is NTFS it can still work but it's not as straightforward.

Yes. You shouldn't have any problems with this assuming the files are standard music and photo formats. Also make sure you don't have any access restrictions set
