desk top very slow

my desk top pc has suddenly gone very' very ' slow.but my lap which is coupled to it via a router is still working normal ....Any ideas PLEASE ??? THANK YOU

Display task manager and sort by cpu usage and memory usage (tm is displayed by ctrl/alt/del). You will get some idea of what is taking up resources.

Failing that power everything off and start again.
