iPhone 3G lost ALL data :o(

Can anyone please help. I never sync or update my iphone or itunes. I did today, first time in 11 months. I updated iTunes to 10.whatever. I then updated my iPhone to 4.1.2 or whatever the latest one is.
My iPhone has now been completely wiped.
Of ALL contacts, data, messages, favourites, notes, everything.
I tried a restore from iTunes, but it doesn't work. The latest backup is from this evening (presumably after iTunes had been updated).
Please help!!

I think you might be stuffed....hence the back up facility and the reminder that comes up before you upgrade software to BACK UP your data :-(
