Belkin N Wireless modem router

After my previous router packed in, I bout one of these devices. The only problem I am having is that while the wireless part works perfectly with no security, as soon as I put WPA protection on, I can connect to the router but not browse the internet.

Any ideas?

I managed to put WEP on and got it to work but I would prefer the extra security of WPA

Excuse me starting with the basics first (and sure this wouldn't apply to yourself). if it's windows XP make sure you have service pack 3 installed as XP doesn't support WPA prior to SP3. Other than that, in my experience wireless saying it's connected but the connection not working is almost always down to using an incorrect WPA passphrase.

Cheers Chuck. WPA is defintely working, as the old router used WPA. However, I noticed this router uses WPA2 and so the problem may lie with that. 128 bit WEP is on it now though and so I am happy with that. It's not as if I am doing any work for the FBI :-)

Assuming you do have service pack 3 installed (which should add support for WPA2) then try updating your wireless network card drivers to the latest version as the card drivers need to support WPA2 too.

Sorry I forgot to mention the laptop is running Vista. To be honest I was just glad to get it working again.

It may assist or it may not but here is some settings from my setup.
It was all set up manually.
My security mode is WPA-Personal, WPA is set to WPA only for games compatibility, I used a nice long pre-shared key with upper and lower case characters, the security type was WPA-Personal as I had problems with WPA2, the encryption type when connecting from windows was set to TKIP.
I understand that you're quite savvy when it comes to these things so I am merely trying to assist wherever I can by sharing what knowledge I have.

Thanks for your help Daisho. Unfortunately on the router, I can only set either WPA2, WEP or disable security. I'll try seeing if I have any new drivers for my wireless card, otherwise I will stick to what I currently have.
