About 18 months ago I had a total crash on my computer
and remember on switching on just a blue? screen with loads of gobbly *** on it. With this type there is no installation disc so was totall at loss what to do. However on checking a piece of paper en the paperwork I found written on it 'Press the F11 KEY as fast as you can at least 20 times'. Is this what I would have to do in if any future major problems occur. Touch wood not needed at the moment

Given you are using XP there should have been discs supplied as they used to those days as well as a recovery partition on yur hard drive. They also provided a recovery disc creator so that you could burn your own as prt of the software loaded on to your computer.To start your recovery boot your computer and keep pressing the F11 key until the process starts . What brand of computer do have?
