downloading java

I have to do some courses for work which I decided to do on my home computer. I have signed up ok and the page comes up but when I try to play it, it says I need to enable javascript.
I looked online and found a free download and followed instructions but still cannot play the course.it still says the same message

I would guess that what you downloaded was Java, not Javascript (which is built in to the browser).

You haven't said which browser you use, so I'll assume IE:
Click Tools/Internet Options
Select the Secutity tab
Click "Custom Level"
Scroll down "Scripting"
Under "Active Scripting" click Enable
Click OK

Thanks both. I have tried again and it says Java is not enabled.
I have been through the instructions you gave rojash, and it says it is enabled.
By IE do you mean internet explorer ? I am on mozilla but can still get onto internet explorer. Im afraid Im not a comp literate person so please bear with me.

As VHG says, Java and JavaScript are not the same thing, so you need to take care in replying. In your original post you said that the message was "JavaScript is not enabled". In your subsequent post you say that the message is "Java is not enabled".

So, what is the message you are getting?

If you're using Firefox, open Tools/Options/Content.
Is Enable Java ticked? If not tick it and restart Firefox.

If the message refers to JavaScript, then you can enable it in Firefox as follows:

Click Tools/Options
Select the Content tab
Check the box "Enable JavaScript"

It's always a good idea to include the pertinent info with your post:
If it's a problem with web pages - Browser and version
problem with e-mail - E-mail client and version
Most problems - Operating system and version.
