"system tools virus"

This somehow got onto the PC, knocked out M/soft Sec Essentials, firefox, control panel, task manager, virtually everything I clicked on came up as infected or corrupted then it started running a sweep of my PC telling me how bad it was etc.

Running malaware anti virus [offline] in safe mode didn't detect anything. After a restart I managed to get IE going and downloaded AVG, that found several trojans & virii and I'm nearly back to everything working normally. Can you load or would you suggest, burning something to a cd so I could put that in if anything similar gets through again?
