Broadband connection speed?

Can someone give me a 'laymans' answer to a network query. I'm living and working in Sweden at the moment and have a 10Mb broadband connection that I connect to via a cable - ethernet/LAN 3 sound familiar? - from a desktop PC with a 10/100 pci card installed.The icon of two computers in the bottom of my screen say connected at "10.0Mbps"  But I've just ordered a laptop with a wireless a,b and g wireless card built in. My questions is, first will it be quicker to connect via the wireless option or the cable like I am using at present? And secondly, is it just a wireless router (or switch or hob or point so many words - do they all mean the same?) I need to buy and plug into the socket on the wall where my current cable is plugged into? Please help. Thanks - keep it simple.

wireless starts at 11Mbps - higher than the 10 you see.

Your actual internet connection is much slower than 10Mbps (anywhere between � and 4Mbps), so it won't matter which connection you use.

Wireless is probably best because you can move around - just keep the cable as a backup plan.

As for the router,switch or hub you need to talk to the broadband supplier. They all have different setups and no one of the above is guaranteed to work with every supplier.
