Getting rid of Temp Internet Files

I'm running Win98 and often I delete Temporary Internet Files via the Tools | Internet Options.  When I checked Windows Explorer after running that option recently I had loads of folders each comprising a combination of 8 letters and numbers as sub-directories of Content.IE5, which was a sub-directory of Temporary Internet Files.

 

Can I safely just delete all those number/letter folders and their contents seeing as they seem to be more temporary internet files?

why so bothered about clearing it all ? the space gain is minimal. u could try deleting them to the recycle bin and then restarting and using the internet a bit and if there r no il effects then delete them permanently

Easiest, safe way, to do it is: Start>Search>select all files/folders and type in *.tmp

This will bring up all .tmp files.  Delete them all. 

Win 98 was a ****** for not deleting temp files and eventually would clutter up your system.  I recently cleaned a friends computer (which had never been cleaned!) and removed 800mb of temp files!

The files I'm referring to are in the various sub-directories of 'Temporary Internet Files' each with folder names of mixed letters and numbers.  At present I have 61 of these such folders each of which average around 14Mb of files of various types - .gif, .js, .swf, .php, .htm, .cab, .css etc etc.

 

I make a point of regularly deleting the *.tmp files as you suggest KebabMeister, but I guess I should take the bull by the horns as Thunderchild suggests and just delete the lot - then grab them out of recycle bin if needed!!

The only thing you can't delete in "Temporary Internet Files" is index.dat but you probably already knew this 'cos it simply won't let you. I've never suffered any side effects from deleting everything else.
I think the worst that'd happen is that next time you came here for example, your pc would have to download all the little "Q A" graphics etc., that it might previously have retrieved from Temporary Internet Files. No great hardship unless you're the last person in the western world to use a 28.8k modem. (I'm assuming you're in the western world!)
