Firefox problems

I'm fairly new to using Firefox as my browser and have been having a few minor problems with it over the last two days. The most obvious is with Facebook. I seem unable to open any link on there and have had to switch back to IE for anything I want to view.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be and how to solve it? It was working fine a couple of days ago then just seemed to 'break'. Clicking links on many other sites seems to be hit and miss as to whether they will open too. I have cleared the cache multiple times to no effect.

i updated my AVG anti virus to the 2012 edition yesterday and then could not enter firefox.Finished up uninstalling and then reinstalling firefox....strange.

Thanks for answering mickrog, it looks like I may have to uninstall FF and go back to IE :(
