I have been trying to cancel aol for the past month. The customer services number has been put on we won't talk to you mode. I sent a letter and an email to cancel and ask for the MAC code.In return the sales dept. rang me and then said cancellations are not their thing.Stalling is all I'm getting.
I have cancelled my bank card and ordered a new one so they can't take any more money but how do I get the MAC code.Who can I go to to make them give it to me
Any help much appreciated as I'm going round the bend here

I gather AOL is run by TalkTalk these days. Says it all ...

Not sure about most of it but I wanted to tell that if yo were paying them by DD then cancelling your bank card and getting a new one will do absolutely nothing to stop them taking payments. They take it from the account, not the card.
i had trouble with them too... you must cancel the dd and instruct the bank not to pay them

It doesn't do that it is what is called a recurring debit and your bank can't stop it only you can by telling the company involved to take no more.I didn't of such a way of paying until the bank told me so I'd advise anyone else not to give their card number to set up regular payments

When is your renewal date callboy? Can you wait until then?

you are right sincnoel bu I joined over ten years ago but since talk talk took over it's gone to pot.
I need to know who to report them to in order to get the MAC code and move to someone else.
Waht number are you ringing?

I have been ringing 0844 499 5555
I had the same problems when I tried to cancel AOL before Talk Talk took over. They only stopped taking money when I found the right body to threaten to report them to. I can't remember the body's name offhand but I'll have a look this evening and post it on here.

don't have a renewal date chrissa I'm supposed to be able to give 1 months notice, but getting hold of them is the problem.
I'll try your suggestion dave the dog thanks
I know this doesn't answer your question, but we cancelled AOL about 2 1/2 months ago by stopping the direct debit. As yet they haven't pulled the plug on the email address so I would suggest making sure you don't pay them anything else then just forget about it
Sorry I've just re-read my answer & realised I've been a bit misleading. What I should have said is that we were able to cancel by phoning up AOL & we then stopped the direct debit to make sure. We got an email to say that the account would be switched off within 24 hours, but it is still going. Their procedures are obviously shot to pieces
The Direct Debit Guarantee applies to all Banks and Building Societies.
Customer can cancel a DD at any time by writing to their Bank or Building Society who must make a refund of any payments made since cancellation without question pending investigation.
I hope you had some luck with the website Dave suggested. When I cancelled the direct debit and changed my bank card, AOL could - and did - carry on taking money from my account because the payment was linked to my account and not my bank card. I can't remember all the details but I couldn't cancel the direct debit and the bank couldn't stop AOL either. I had to contact my bank every month to ask them to take back the money, which they did. I hope you'll sort things out without needing to do that.

AOL ignored my letters; telephone calls were a waste of time and they replied to my first couple of emails with what were obviously standard replies, unrelated to what I actually said to them. After that they ignored my emails as well. I only got a positive response when I threatened to report them to CISAS, and then I received a letter blaming their 'system driven issue' but they did sort things out.

This was a couple of years ago before Talk Talk were involved so things may have changed. If not, this site may help you

Good luck.
callboy how much do you pay per month i am with aol
Question Author
thanks juliefer I'll be doing what you suggest.I'm very grateful for all the help I have received.
Dr filth I pay 17.30 a month but after 11 years the talk talk takeover has sent them into decline,so I'm off
You telling me YOUR bank will not stop paying them even if you remove your authority and tell your bank they will be responsible for the fees they pay thereafter?

Having AOL installed is like having a virus anyway ..
Get a proper ISP.
