Secured Wireless Connection Setup.

Please help. I have had a wireless connection for sometime now, but it is unsecured (open). I have since found that my neighbour has been helpijng himself to the network and using my connection. I have since tried to configure my router to make the connection secure, but I cant seem to get it to work. On the router config, I set the uption to 802.11xxx security but then I cant get the internet to connect. It tells me It cant verify the certificate? Please tell me what I am doinf wrong?

Firstly, Put your MAC address in the router to enable wireless access for only that MAC Address 

Set your router/access point up with mac filtering enabled

To find the MAC address of your PC/Laptop go to the DOS prompt and type IPCONFIG /ALL

I have managed to get it to connect now using the key, but if I have the "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication" enabled, the connection only holds for about 5 mins then disconnects itself. If I disable it, the connection stays. Is it vital to have the authentication switched on?

Not if you do what quickthinker suggests and use MAC address filtering to only allow pc's that you want to connect.  (Each network adapter has a unique MAC address which you can tell the router to allow through and block all others)
