I've managed to connect it to the wireless hub, BT infinity. Can anyone recommend a free, reliable anti-virus, firehall etc. please.

I alwys use AVG with no problems, I believe there is another one with a good rep called Avast.

I also use AVG free in conjunction with Microsoft Security Essentials (built into Windows7) and have had no problems. Be wary with AVG that it is the free version you sign up for and not a free trial of the full version.

Microsoft Security Essentials is not built in to Windows, it is a free downloadable anti virus product. AVG is also an anti virus. Running both could cause a conflict. I would stick with the Microsoft one as AVG causes slow boot up and browsing.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials with no problems, AVG is ok as well, but you only have one anti virus programme installed and running at a time.

MSE picks up its virus updates through windows updates, which is probably what Tinkerpuss means.

I assume your using W7 and its own firewall is adequate for most peoples needs.

You need to download and install the programme from the above link. You are not secure with no anti virus product installed.

I'm surprised your Dell didn't come with a 12 month subscription to McAfee, they usually have some sort of AV product included in the price.

To check the firewall is on go to
Control Panel/System and Security/Windows Firewall

Generally the default setting is on.

You still need to install anti virus programme and ensure it runs on start up.

Great, I've uninstalled the temporary macafee and activated MSE and it is scanning now

Daffy, it came with 10 days left on macafee and while the sony vaio is on a 2 year contract with macafee, up in January 2013
