Free anti virus protection

What is the best free anti virus protection?
At the moment I have AVG but I am having a V Protect Application that keeps popping up when I start my computer.
My operating system is XP and my browser if FireFox 9.0.1
I don't want to leave my system unprotected by deleting AVG before loading it again.

Strictly speaking the correct process would be
1) download MSE
2) disconnect from the internet
3) uninstall AVG (restarting as needed)
4) install MSE (restarting as needed)
5) connect to internet again.
6) ensure MSE has latest updates
Although I wouldn't bother with doing that myself TBH, I'd just remove AVG and install MSE straight away.
And yes, MSE will work fine alongside malwarebytes etc etc.
