Harold's army fought at the Battle of Stamford Bridge then marched south for the Battle Of Hastings. The march took 12 days and thus took its toll on the weary soldiers.
The Roman Army were famous for using their shields to form an almost impregnable barrier against a volley of arrows. They would close ranks, the inner core would link shields above their heads and move into a crouch/kneeling position. As the shields were rectangular there were no gaps. The soldiers on the outer ring kept their shields vertical giving protection on all sides. The whole thing was said to resemble a tortoise.
This is a good link with pics, including one of a 'tortoise'.

Christy, don't make a habit of this. Don't you have books with this info in? Honestly, there won't always be huge groups of people sitting on the 'net waiting to answer your questions when you have to sit exams or go to interviews. I know I sound like a miserable old woman, but you do need to learn to use the library and search the internet yourself and BEFORE the night before your exam!!
jno makes a good point when he asks you to tell us what kind of mark HE gets!!!
actually this was only a peactice exam and my library was shut i am only 12 yeares old and i could not find anything on the internet ! i had only been told about the test the day before and thought people on answer bank were nice ,obviously not !!! i am not happy !! i was asking for a bit of help revising not to do my test for me ,the only people who were nice about this was philtaz and callisto thanks to them for the help and support and to the rest of you i am upset i thought you nice guys would have helped obviously not it was only a litlle test we had in class ,i think i might find a website were people will respect my messages and answer my questions and not be sarci about it ,i am soooooo unhappy now !!!
If I hadn't respected your question, Christy, I wouldn't have answered it. Believe it or not, all the answers I gave were correct (except the one about the Roman army, which I didn't know enough about) - but like everyone else I didn't have time to write essays, and your question sounded as if straightforward answers would be enough.
And Woofgang certainly respected you enough to offer seriously good advice - she wouldn't have known, any more than I did, that you only had 24 hours' notice (you should perhaps have mentioned this in your question, everyone on this site is extremely understanding). Hope it went ok, though.
chrisandbex,
Hope it went OK for you. I find it difficult to comprehend that you couldn't find anything on the net though!
Put that link in the Favourites of your browser and learn to use keywords and you'll be fine. Don't worry about those who've had a dig at you, after all you're only a 12 year old asking for advice! People don't seem to question how or why kjc wouldn't sometimes be better served on the Phrases and Sayings category by investing in an English dictionary!
Keep asking if you're stuck, that's what we're here for!
actually, Philtaz, kjc's queries do bring occasional snide comments. But her questions always involve words and phrases that aren't in standard English dictionaries, let alone English-Korean ones. I answer them where I can, too.
Another good resource is www.wikipedia.org - an online encyclopedia. It has features on the battle of Stamford Bridge, Harold II, Hannibal and the rest - but as with all reference works, you'll need to be careful with your spelling of course.
come on Christy, most of us on here remember being 12 which is why you got loads of help and only one mildly snotty comment. Now honestly are you going to tell us that the things that you asked us didn't form part of your course work, that your teacher had never mentioned any of them and that you had never seen them in any of the learning resource that goes with your course work????
What would you have done if the answerbank website hadn't been working??
