a problem in Word

I have opened a new Word document, used the toolbar option to colour the background blue, then put white text on, again choosing the colour from those on offer on the toolbar. But when I try to preview, the document is shown as blank and when I print the page, I just get a blank printout. Funnily enough, if I change the colour of some of the text to black, these few words only show in the preview and print out, with a normal colourless background. Is there a way of getting round this please? (I didn't know what section to put this in, it's not really technical or business, is it)

Under print... preview...options, click "print background colors and images"
and for good measure click "print hidden text"
...and be sure to have plenty of blue ink in your printer cartridge!!
mmm ... hard one!

my only thought, a coloured background is very 'ink heavy' instead of just using coloured paper!
Dr b has the answer.... but as cath says, unless you own shares in a ink factory just go out and get blue paper.

You would have to print in yellow on it though, as you can't print white text, but yellow on blue shows up fine.

Thank you all for your help - but I still have the problem; after I choose print..preview I don't see options anywhere. Is this because I am using Word 2003?
Sorry, long since forgotten what Word 2003 toolbars etc look like (this after thinking I would never be able to adapt to Word 2007!). Is there a general "word options" menu or icon somewhere?
Question Author
Yes,after expanding all the menus, I have found options under tools. There is actually a blue background with white text listed there but won't let me choose it. Have also found and activated hidden text so now I will experiment. This was going to be part of a quick birthday card for a friend - probably would have been quicker after all to pop into town and buy some blue paper - but this way I am learning something! Thank you very much for your help and patience Dr. B

In 2003 to alter how it previews, go to file > print then click on 'options' bottom left of dialogue box. This will have a check-box for background images and colours.
