Due to congestion in all AOL! Mail user accounts, there shall be a removal exercise of all used and unused AOL Accounts. AOL! Inc would be shutting down several accounts.

You will have to confirm your account. So you are required to logon to your Online AOL Account with the provided link below.

For immediate access, please click here to validate your account:

NB: Failure to to update your AOL! account will result to a permanent closure.

Thank you for being a loyal AOL! Mail user.

Do you really think AOL are going to close down accounts?

Of course it is a scam.

btw If you "hover" the mouse over the link above in your email and then look at the bottom of the email you will see the REAL web address it will go to, and it wont be AOL
Yes. A similar message comes from other 'sources' too, notably 'Paypal'. I always assume anything like that is a scam.
In all likelihood yes, if in doubt contact AOL yourself. I have an old AOL email address that I never use, I just logged in and there are 100's of unread messages going back about a year, if they were trying to get rid of mail users, I'm sure I'd be first in the hitlst.
Yes its a scam , just delete it . Even better report it as a phishing scam I have an option to do this on hotmail, AOL should have the same.

With these sorts of thing you can always put your mind at rest by ignoring all the links someone has sent you in the e-mail and going to your account as you normally would. I've had warnings about lack of use before now, from accounts I use rarely.

Thank you all for your reassurance - I am at a loss to understand why a response to my post should be removed - Has anyone any ideas?
since it was sometime between 22:53 and 08:12 one possibility is spam which gets posted early most mornings

Thank you bibblebub
I've had messages from o2, and all the main Banks and Building societies telling me my account will be closed if I don't confirm the logon for their renewed security. I've ignored them all, but I did worry about the o2 user one but nothing has happened anyway.
