transfer of contacts from laptop to iPad

My wife has just bought an iPad. Short of me emailing most of my contacts, asking them to write to her, is there any way of transferring contacts (and perhaps other info including pictures) from the laptop to the iPad? I have looked at the on-line user manual for iPad 2, but found it not very helpful!

Install iTunes and use that to sync contacts, pictures etc. to the ipad, the contacts may be tricky depending on what form they're in on the laptop but iTunes can handle a lot of formats.
