Update From Vista To Windows 7

I have just reformatted my sons lap top as he wants me to put Windows 7 on I have run a check to see if Windows 7 will run and it tells me to install Windows Vista Service Pack 1 I have run windows update and installed Windows Service Pack 1 but every time I run the update it tells me to install it again even though when I check it says it has installed (about 4 time)
What am I doing wrong

If it ran Vista, it's a fair bet it'll run Win7
Make sure the Win7 drivers are available from the manufacturer's site(s).
If so, just do a clean install of 7.

be careful neither my printer or scanner has drivers on win7
and my freecom tv tuner dosent

Rojash is what you saying then if I down load win 7 and install it will format the drive and load in win 7 Why I ask is because I thought that is what it done but when I run a check it told me to make sure I had vista service pack1 installed.

depends what drive you've put win7 on , you should have ticked the drive that vista is on then it would have got rid of vista.if that's what you've done then haven't a clue cos it looks odd to me

You say you've just reformatted it. I assume from that that there is nothing on it that you want to keep, or that you have the installers for any programs and backups of any data.

That being the case, you can download the ISO image from the MS, burn it to a disk, boot from the disk, delete the existing partition and perform a completely clean install. As you will be completely removing Vista, whether or not it has service packs becomes irrelelvant.

The only caveat, is that you will need to complete the installation twice. First install Win7 from the boot disk, and say that you don't want to activate automatically.
Once Win7 is installed, boot as normal, place the disk in the drive, and let it do it's funky thing (which will be an "upgrade").
Once that's finished you can activate it as normal.

The reason for the above, is that if you simply install it once it will fail to activate (as it will not treat it as an upgrade). If you install it twice, the second will be treated as an upgrade and you can then activate it.
