I know this is going to sound a silly question..but...can one Skype the same person on two machines at once eg: a desktop and a laptop.

Try it and see.

For friends I used to chat to on MSN, I can run Skype and Pidgin and log in with the same id and password on both at the same time, so my guess is that it may well be possible.
