Uploading Web Pages And Getting Gobbledegook

It's been year since I used ftp and html but my wife has just taken over a website that has to be updated that way.
Using Filezilla, we successfully downloaded pages to edit, opened to edit in Word and saved as webpage. Then uploaded it.
Everything appeared to go fine but when we open the page, it is just a mess of chinese characters and gobbledegook.

Can someone tell us what we're doing wrong, please?

Firstly don't use Word to create html pages - it adds lots of extraneous code.

There are ree html editors available. Try seamonkey from mozailla - its a browser, but also has an editor built in.
