Ethernet Connection

Is it possible that the ethernet card inside a pc can throttle the broadband speed?

I get much faster speeds on my tablet and netbook than on my pc.

Desktop and netbook run on W7 and the tablet is Android Jelly Bean.

I am connected via ethernet on my desktop but the speed is much the same if I connect via wifi.

Different browsers make no difference.

The ethernet connection is showing at 100mbps; I should be getting 60 wotsits speed and manage about 20.

Any clues?

Can only make wild guesses. It seems unlikely ethernet could affect broadband to me as I'd expect the board to have processing power such that it sorts out the ethernet without using significant common PC resource. Although I guess if that is not the case there may be a bottleneck for some resource somewhere. Processing power maybe ?

I believe the shown connection speed is what ethernet is connecing at, your throughput of data will be less. 20 sounds a bit off though. Is there a problem with your ethernet card ?

Windows tells me the device is working properly and the driver is up to date :(

Only your ISP can throttle your internet speed . If you are getting 100mbps then you are doing very well. You will only get that speed if you have broadband cable the best you can get with ADSL2+ is up to 20mbps. If you want to get a faster DNS server then download and run NameBench which will give you the best server to use and if the one you are now using is slower than the suggested one then change your IPV4 adapter settings to get its benefit.
