Yesterday I could not get on line although my wireless router connection was excellent. A message said that "my proxy server could not connect to remote server".

So I had to use Safe Mode with internet.

This morning my internet is working fine.

Anyone know why this happens and what the message actually means.

A Proxy Server is a computer that sits between you and the internet.

Companies often use a Proxy Server as a "barrier" to the internet, so their staff do not go DIRECT to the internet but via this Proxy Server.

The Proxy Server controls traffic going out the internet and coming in from the internet, and adds a level of security and control.

The Proxy Server can be used to block access to certain sites for example (porn, gambling, shopping etc).

I am not sure why YOU should be getting this message, unless you have a special setup for your internet connection (some home users do use a proxy server to "hide" their internet activity).

It is possible to change Windows settings to use a proxy server, so maybe that option had been set somehow (had you been changing any settings?).

Strange that you were able to get to the internet in safe mode, and it is ok now, so I am not sure what the answer is.

But at least now it has been fixed.

Thanks VHG for your very informative reply. I have no special set up or attempted to hide any activity. This is the 2nd time this has happened and I got rid of it last time by doing a recovery off Safe Mode.
This has only happened since I started using a Three MiFi mobile router, not sure if this is relevant.
I have just checked my LAN settings and noticed that "use proxy server" was ticked. Could this be the problem?
It could be the problem, but as I don't know your setup I am not sure if it is supposed to be on or not.

You could try unticking it and see if it all still works.

If it does work leave it off, if not put the tick back on again.

Cheers VHG, I have unticked it and all is ok at the moment.
