this doesn't happen all the time - just every so often - and as yet i can't find anything happening that is the cause.

it just halts, can't move cursor etc, but just for a few seconds, then works again for slightly longer, then does it again and again.

I close down any non essential programs etc - ( i mostly have them all off anyway)
i have looked at the processes etc but I am not sure what whats.

but any ideas what it could be?

i have run all sorts of tests, error checking, clean up, antivirus, malware etc etc, and all is ok.

the computer has a special 'cool' type function, so although it does get warm it is rarely actually hot.
i only occasionally use it on my knee - usually have a board - but even then i am careful to position it so there is a large gap to allow air flow. (its actually more on the edge on knee and belly, so a large V-shaped gap under it.

any ideas?

i assumed it was running some process - and if so how can i tell what, and stop it when its the wrong time?

Thanks (Asus X54C - win 7)

Do you have Norton Internet Security? It was that regularly freezing my Windows 7 PC for up to 15 seconds at a time several times within a couple of minutes that lead me to get rid of it asap.
