I am trying to set up my laptop (Vista) with a programme which will allow me to send, receive my email and for it to be accessible when offline.

I think I've used 'Windows Live Mail' before but it doesn't seem compatible now.

Vista is a nightmare upgrade to Windows 7
Thunderbird is an excellent email client (out of the same stable as the Firefox web browser), which should fully meet your needs:

Nothing wrong with Windows Vista. Anyone who has Vista can set-up an E/mail account with Windows Mail.

I downloaded Thunderbird but when it downloaded my messages they were all in one Inbox and my folders and contacts had disappeared. I couldn't see ow to get them back so I uninstalled it.

As far as Windows 7 is concerned I had a look to see if the laptop is compatible and it seems there would be several issues with uninstalling and reinstalling elements of my system which I'm nervous about.

I can't see how much it would cost me to upgrade to Windows 7 either, or is it free?

Does anyone know?

Windows Live Mail is part of Windows Essentials, alas no longer available for Vista :(
Time to upgrade to Windows 7 .You can upgrade from Vista but it is almost impossible so a clean install would be the way to go you can still buy OEM copies of Windows 7 from EBAY or your local computer store may have some. Just make sure that you have at least 4 GB of RAM installed should you decide to go this way.
There is Not any need to install Windows 7 when one has Vista. At the moment I am using Vista on my Desktop PC and have W7 in a Laptop.

Incidentally, canasta...There is a difference between Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail......Are you sure that you Do Not have Windows Mail in your laptop.? It would have been an integral part of Vista.

Yes, Windows Mail is where I started but it doesn't support Hotmail ;(

In the past I've used Windows Live Mail but that is now not obtainable outside of Windows Essentials which again I cannot download to use with Vista!!

It's all very annoying but I checked and my laptop would be ok to use with Windows 7 with some tweaking of the system ;(. I didn't feel competent to 'tweak' myself so have taken it into a local laptop repair shop for them to sort it out. Cross fingers!!
