If as you say..."not too savvi with IT"... Upgrading your Operating System will Not be easy and could cost you half the price of a new laptop.

Is there any special reason for you wishing to upgrade ?.

We seem to have our knickers in a twist over XP. If you have a decent anti-virus software package, then you should be protected. XP works perfectly well, so so why buy another laptop ?
I work in IT and I am bemused by those who think that having an antivirus application is a good substitute for a modern operating system in today's online environment.

On average, three new strains of viruses are being released onto the internet each second. Antivirus companies cannot keep pace.

Modern viruses are highly sophisticated packages constantly morphing and covering their tracks to evade detection. Some arrange to deliver themselves in separate parts and some carry their own antivirus modules to fight off other viruses so they have exclusive access to their stolen data payload.

Meanwhile XP, hailing from the turn of the century, does not even support Mandatory Integrity Control to isolate crucial parts of the operating system from applications.

Be nostalgic if you like but do stop pretending it is a wise choice to keep using XP in an online scenario.
It would seem beso has the gen here. Changing my mind on this issue, if putting a more modern OP on your laptop is too expensive, perhaps it would be better to buy a new one. Prices for laptops are just a fraction of what they used to be, even only 5 years ago.
Have you thought whether your laptop can run Windows 7?
Run the Windows Upgrade Advisor just to see.

Windows XP will eventually succumb to security loopholes posed by modern viruses, malware, trojans etc. None of them will be addressed by updates which will now longer be available.
Once support for XP stops and the majority of people have switched to Win 7 or 8 will the hackers and crackers spend their time writing viruses for the newer operating systems and leave old XP alone. Where's the challenge in writing viruses for such an old system.
^^^ money!

Still a lot of XP users out there and therefore plenty of personal info available.
The following is worth reading for a list of AV programmes which will still be available for XP :-
