Help With Twitter

Can anyone please explain how Twitter works. I've ticked to follow a few people but unlike facebook I never seem to see what they are tweeting about. I keep hearing about certain tweets going viral how does that happen? Any help please.

Viral means that #hashtagslikethis are referred to a lot. Sometimes they are a charity campaign, sometimes it's a special guest. It could be anything really.

In Twitter, if you click on the 'Home' link near top left of the screen, that will take you to the screen where you should see tweets from all the people you're following, and any retweets they've made. Are you clicking the 'Follow' button in the profiles of those you wish to follow?

What I can't tell you, with this stupid new layout they have, is the difference between the two tabs in everyone's profile, that are labelled 'Tweets' and 'Tweets & Replies'. I asked about this in the Technology/Internet categories but no-one's responded.
