Email Contact List Hacked

I have received an email from a friends address, but which clearly was not written by him, of that I'm certain. His email contacts have been hacked. Do I now need to change my email address please? Should he change his? What are the possible effects of either of us NOT changing email addresses?

I'd do a complete scan of the computer first then make sure you don't open any attachments in emails for a while at least.
