Backing Up Contacts From Phone, To Google Account ........

So I've got a new Android phone (Sony Xperia Z1 compact) and I transferred my contacts from my old phone by firstly copying the contacts to my SIM card, then placing the SIM into my new phone, then copying from the SIM to my new phone.
I've now noticed that I can sync everything to my Google account - a form of back-up I suppose.
My phone has def synced (it's got the date of the sync, etc) .... so where and how do I access this stored data.
My Google account has 2 emails - a gmail and a hotmail (both linked to the same account).
Am I being naïve in assuming that my contacts have been backed up somewhere online, 'cos that's what I'm assuming ??
If that's not the case - how exactly do I access my backed-up contacts, so I can view, edit and back-up my contacts when needed ????
