I use 7zip myself with no problems.

7-Zip is indeed a good product but such file compression software is largely unnecessary these days, because Windows has the facility built into it.

To unzip a compressed file in Windows, simply double-click on it.

To create a 'zipped' file in Windows, first highlight all of the relevant files, using the standard Windows techniques. (i.e. to select all of the files in a folder press Ctrl A. To select a block of files, click on the first one and then hold Shift down when clicking on the last one. To select lots of individual files, hold Ctrl down while clicking on each one in turn).

Then right-click on any of the highlighted files and select Send To > Compressed (Zipped) Folder.

Easy peasy!

Thanks, everyone.
Buenchico, I've tried clicking on the file and it comes up with WinZip asking me to buy the full-priced version. I'd been using the free introductory version for some weeks, but can't get any further than that now. I'll try 7zip. Thank you.
Because you've had a version of WinZip on your computer, the 'file association' for zip files has been changed from using Windows Explorer (which can do the job anyway) to using WinZip (which, annoyingly, then opens but demands payment).

Simply resetting the file association back to using Windows Explorer will solve the problem for you. There are 6 different ways of doing that shown here; I'd use Method 2:

I have peazip installed. It's not bad.

Thanks, Buenchico and O_G. Sorry for late acknowledgement of your replies. Internet problems.
